My mom recently gave me a quick overview on the history of lawns. Made sense. Lawns were originally based on prestige. The greener and larger your lawn = wealth. Condsidering the maintenance and water consumption it takes to uphold this "standard" of living, I can see how this concept emerged.
Now days, grass is a common sight. I enjoy seeing green as much as the next person. However, I'm fortunate to live in an area that rains enough to provide this majority of the year. It kills me in the summer to see our nasty brown lawn. I'll admit, most of that is just plain laziness- a refusal on my end to lay out sprinklers. However, I easily justify this knowing that our household is not using up water for superficial reasons.
Why not research for native plants and vegetation? If the vegetation is meant to survive in your habitat, that means you are using up less of our precious natural resources. You might be surprised by the wide variety of horticultural species that can brighten and beautify your home and yard.
