I'm Dreaming of a green Christmas...

It's been in my brain to start planning for an eco-friendly holiday season. All I see is a ton of trash on Christmas morning, glaring-electricity-sucking lights on for hours and trees cut down by the zillions... what happy thoughts! :)I plan on writing a series of blogs on ways I am going to attempt to reverse my personal damage on the world this year.

The first major decision that has been weighing on my mind is the tree issue. Do I cut down a tree (from a tree farm) like we usually do? I know those tree will be replanted and the sole purpose of the tree is for just that. At least the tree will be reused as wood chips and mulch.

The other option is to buy an artificial tree. I give a big a big "YEY!" to no spiders in my house! Every year we invite at least a dozen or more spiders into our home with our live tree. Can you say, "Heeby Jeebies???" The spider factor alone makes me want an fake tree, however, I can hardly bare to think of the energy and petroleum that go into manufacturing it.

Any input on this? I'm totally undecided!

All through my growing up years my parents had a fake tree in our home. When I was on my own, I raised my fist like Scarlett O'Hara and said, "As God is my witness, I'll never have a fake Christmas tree again!" :-)

And I didn't, until last year. We just never got around to getting a live one, and then when we were ready, the pickins were slim. The robust fake we purchased at the 11th hour did just as well, and we didn't have any disposal issues to deal with post-holiday.

I'm where you're at now, but I'm inclined to think that the fake will be our centerpiece again. Whole Foods sells mini trees made from rosemary. I'm thinking of getting one for each of us to individually decorate and place throughout the house. I'm telling myself that afterwards, their needles could be prepped and used fresh and later dried in my cooking (and likely others'--I'd share) in the coming year.

And yes, I can say, "Heeby Jeebies!!" :-)

What a cool idea! Very creative... and the rosemary is definitely justified! :)

I still have not made up my mind on the situation. I've had some input from others. One suggestion was a live tree... another person just teased about not coming over for Christmas if we get a fake tree. But hey, at least he offered for us to get a tree off of their land since they already thin their trees.

Well, I know there are far more detrimental decisions that I could be facing in the world, but I'm still struggling!

Thanks Lisa... I'm lovin' your clever ways once again!!!
