CFL Disposal

I've known since my last year of college (2002) that CFL light bulbs contain mercury. How could that many years go by without me investigating this subject? First off, mercury is one of the main reasons that you no longer see the "old" traditional thermometers. The only time you need to worry about direct exposure is if the glass that holds the mercury breaks.

This is why proper disposal of CFLs is essential. Just think of all the mercury that would be released if everyone just threw their bulbs into the dumpster where the bulb is destined to break. For answers to common questions about CFL bulbs and mercury, visit Energy Star. For proper disposal, the site recommends visiting Earth911 or contacting your local waste management company. Just remember that they do not go into your regular household garbage.
